SENIOR FOOD MINISTRY

jarcher : October 6, 2011 9:59 am : Headlines, Ministries, Mission Owasso

Mission Owasso began in early 2009. Almost immediately, the need to help our senior citizens who have a difficult time buying groceries verses buying medicine became evident. By the third week of the month the money is gone and so is the food. In August, 2010 a team began taking bags of food to those we knew needed help. About a month later we had 28 bags of food to deliver. We now fill and deliver 77 bags in the 3rd week of the month.

After a bit of trial and error, it was found that our church members prefer to donate money for us to do the buying. This works out better as we can control the variety and numbers of items needed. It is always a blessing for a food drive to fill in the gap. God always provides what is needed.

Several people are involved in the senior program. Since we deliver a bag that weighs from 20-22 lbs. we have 15 people who fill the bags and deliver to the doors. We ask them to take the same list of names all the time and form a relationship with the senior. Some need help putting their trash out or running errands for them. Some buy fruit and other fresh items such as bread, eggs, milk, bananas to add to each stop.

We would love to have more volunteers. One lady delivered 13 bags in 100 degree weather one evening after working all day. Our volunteers are so precious and a gift from God.

Please feel free to call Carol McClure if you want to volunteer.

Thank you.
