About Giving
There’s a lot you might expect a church to say about giving. We all know that everything we have comes from God. This includes your talent, your skills, your experiences and your resources. There’s no question giving is one of those topics everyone has an opinion about. How much should I give? How do I start? Is it really necessary?
What if we told you that God doesn’t need your money? It’s true. He owns it all. God is not impressed by the size of our income. What impresses God is your willingness to do what He asks. It’s that simple. God doesn’t tell us to tithe because He needs something from us. He tells us to tithe because we need to learn to give.
What is a Tithe?
It’s an act of faith and obedience. A tithe is 10% of everything God gives you. In Malachi 3:10 – 11 God says, “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house.” The ‘storehouse’ in the Old Testament is a picture of the New Testament church. So as New Testament Believers we worship God with the tithe; or ten percent of our income.
But giving away 10% of everything we make can be a big, often frightening commitment. That’s why we ask people to take the Six-Month Tithe Test: It’s kind of a money back guarantee.
6 Month Tithe Test
Basically the Six-Month Tithe test is a contract based on the promises of God in Malachi 3:10 – 11. We commit to you that if you tithe for six months and God doesn’t hold true to His promises of blessings, we will refund 100% of your tithe. No questions asked.
Stewardship – Generosity
We believe God’s desire for people financially is not to follow a rigid, legalistic pattern for giving. This means tithing is only a first step. God calls us to be good stewards of our finances so we can be generous with the things He’s entrusted to us. This is about more than 10%. It’s about managing our finances so that when God calls we can give over and above the tithe towards opportunities for ministry that have eternal value. This is what it means to be generous.
Every semester the church offers classes in Financial Peace University in order to help people learn principles of good stewardship. It’s not just about giving, but managing your finances so you can live debt free. Campus Development
The people of First Baptist Owasso minister to the needs of our community and our world. Our campus is a place of equipping and encouragement. Just like the ministries of First Owasso our campus is always growing in order to make room for even more people. We have just completed Phase 2 of a five phase plan for campus development. You can be part of this exciting growth by giving generously over and above your tithe. Value the Vision is the name of our campaign to eliminate our current mortgage so we can most effectively accomplish ministry in the years to come.
